What do you think makes children unhappy? For many parents or educators, visions of playground squabbles or being served the wrong dessert are the first images that come to mind. However, researchers are finding a surprising new culprit for what causes children severe unhappiness: online pressures.

Unfortunately, these feelings can't be fixed with a simple menu alteration or a heart-to-heart about being nice. Pressures from social media can cause feelings of unhappiness to run deep in vulnerable adolescents. This ability tocause anxiety or depression in our sons and daughters requires us to examine social media's role in our kids' lives and emotional well-being.

I placed an iPad into the outstretched hands of each of my third-grade students, and a reverent, tech-induced hush descended on our classroom. We were circled together on our gathering rug, just finished with a conversation about “digital citizenship” and “online safety” and “our school district bought us these iPads to help us learn, so we are using them for learning purposes.” They’d nodded vigorously, thrilled by the thought of their very own iPads to take home every night and bring to school every day. Some of them had never touched a tablet before, and I watched them cradle the sleek devices in their arms. They flashed their gap-toothed grins — not at each other but at their shining screens.

That was the first of many moments when I wished I could send the iPads back.

I am going to post a series of educational videos that I am producing on the ground current pollution problem we are experiencing not only in Ontario but in other provinces and in other countries, like the U.S. Most people are unaware of this form of electromagnetic pollution. However, it is getting worse and needs to be dealt with. Ground current is a problem not only in some rural areas but in urban areas as well. We have considerable information about how it affects livestock, especially dairy cows. It also affects people and non-agriculture animals.

Attempts to bring in a private member’s bill in Ontario to resolve the ground current pollution problem has failed twice now, first in 2006 and again this year. I have no hope that this government is going to do anything useful about the ground current problem. Nor do I think a change in government will make any difference. Our electrical utility, that is responsible for much of this problem, is being sold to the private sector and I certainly don’t think they will spend the money to get the current out of the ground.

The world's 47 largest producers of greenhouse gases must respond within 45 days to an unprecedented legal complaint filed Wednesday by the Philippines, which alleges the fossil fuel behemoths have deprived millions of residents of the island nation of their human rights through catastrophic global warming.

The Commission on Human Rights of the Philippines (CHR), a governmental body, sent the multinational "carbon majors" a 60-page letter (pdf) accusing them of "breaching people"s fundamental rights to 'life, food, water, sanitation, adequate housing, and to self determination,'" the Guardian reports.

SCHOOLS are battling to deal with the consequences of boys’ exposure to porn at a young age, from sexting to deviant behaviour and viewing explicit images in class.

Easy access to violent porn has been blamed in part for a rise in problem sexual behaviour by children, with one service reporting 200 referrals in the past year.

It comes after hundreds of concerned teachers, parents and academics wrote to a Senate inquiry into the harm internet porn was having on children, with school heads worried about a “dramatic increase” in opportunities for students to access it.

Wearable devices are enabling patient-generated data for a U.S. cancer study, as connected technology is proving increasingly useful for medical research.

As reported in an article by Mobile Health News, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK) has teamed up with cloud-based analytics startup Medidata to research multiple myeloma. This comes as wearbles are used increasingly in medical applications.

Glyphosate has a long history of safe use. In evaluations spanning four decades, the overwhelming conclusion of experts worldwide has been that glyphosate, when used according to label directions, does not present an unreasonable risk of adverse effects to humans, wildlife or the environment.

In March 2015, IARC convened a meeting to evaluate the potential carcinogenic risks to humans from several pesticides, including glyphosate, an active ingredient in many popular herbicides, including Roundup brand herbicides. After that meeting the IARC panel classified glyphosate in Category 2A, a category that also includes red meat.

Based on the overwhelming weight of evidence, Monsanto strongly disagrees with IARC’s classification of glyphosate.

The Environmental Health News letter of 27 July 2016 included three stories from local newspapers about the ubiquitous use of pesticides on farmlands, golf courses, private lawns, school yards in New York State and Iowa and the health effects these are causing to people. In Europe, there is a move to ban glyphosate, the toxic substance classified in 2015 by the International Agency for Research on Cancer as "probably carcinogenic" (2A), one level below "carcinogenic". Back in the U.S., it is alarming to see so much cancer among people exposed to these pesticides. On Long Island, where our family lived for many years, golf courses and lawns have been and continue to be - drenched in pesticides, seeping into the water supply and permeating the air with a strong chemical stench. Will this genocide ever stop?! According to one of the articles, "trade groups for pesticides spent $46.5 million on lobbying to shape food safety, environmental laws" and "golf-related groups spent $1.5 million on lobbying tied to environment and pesticides." Disability rights advocates are filing suit on behalf of blind New York residents who say the kiosks are not accessible to them.

A disability rights group filed a complaint Thursday against the city for creating WiFi kiosks across the city that are inaccessible to the blind. The LinkNYC program is gradually installing 7,500 kiosks across the five boroughs in place of old pay phones, but the nonprofit Disability Rights Advocates says blind people are unable to use them.

The complaint was filed on behalf of several blind New Yorkers who can't use the kiosks and the National Federation of the Blind against the city's information and technology department, its commissioner Anne Roest, and CityBridge LLC, the consortium of three companies that makes the kiosks.

The survey of 1,500 parents by Opinium found that on average, UK children had a phone by age seven, an iPad by age eight, and a smart phone by age ten.

Most children can use a television aged just four years old – before they can tie their own shoelaces, swim without help or ride a bicycle without stabilizers.

They browse the internet as early as age five, on average seven years earlier than their parents.

Awareness of the health risks of wireless technology in French-speaking Switzerland ("Suisse Romande") is at best poor, worse - almost non-existent. There are only a few doctors diagnosing and treating electrosensitivity, although physicians practicing holistic or integrative medicine may be doing so. Such doctors are rare and cannot take on new patients. There seems to be an unhealthy collusion among doctors to ignore this issue, either out of ignorance, because wireless is everywhere in their offices and in hospitals and clinics, medical education does not include emerging environmental illnesses in its curriculum, and/or they are scared to go against the powerful telecoms industry which is a vital part of the Swiss economy.

We doubt that "Suisse Romande" has ever heard of the environmental medicine counselling structure for electrohypersensitive persons established by the Society of Doctors for the Environment. One health insurance company promotes mobile phone subscriptions for families, including young children. Confronted by an advocacy group for safer wireless, they replied by asking for the names of the group's committee members and saying, the group's description of risks was "alarmist". A major department store sells babyphones for very young children. The group drew attention to health risks and to the harmful exposure of factory workers in China producing these and received a defensive reply. Others, who have written to the health and disability insurance authorities, have received unsatisfactory replies. And yet, the health warnings are there on the sites of the federal government, the Cancer League, and in manuals for mobile phones, virtual reality headsets, smart watches, etc.

A team led by researchers in the labs of Atul Butte, MD, PhD, director of the Institute for Computational Health Sciences and a professor of pediatrics at UC San Francisco, and Yinon Ben-Neriah, MD, PhD, a professor of immunology and cancer research at the Lautenberg Center of Immunology of Hebrew University Medical School in Jerusalem, identified the role of a subtle form of inflammation in human and mouse cancer cells. According to the authors, this so-called “parainflammation” may explain how a number of different forms of cancer begin.

Brain tumours are now the leading cancer in American adolescents, and incidence is rising in young adults according to the largest, most comprehensive analysis of these age groups to date.

Canada is undoubtedly similar. “The astounding increases reported in this study, especially in young people, mirror what I am seeing in my clinic,” responded Dr. Jacob Easaw, from the Tom Baker Cancer Centre in Calgary. “Canada is in the process of establishing a comparable brain tumour registry, so these analyses will not be available here for 15 or 20 years. I am increasingly convinced that mobile phones are a major cause, and urgent action is needed.”

A New York Times article on children and cellphones failed to provide the slightest hint that cellphone radiation is particularly dangerous to children, enraging health advocates.

The July 21 article was by "lead consumer technology writer" Brian X. Chen. Before joining NYT in 2011 he was at Wired, where his reporting on Apple and the wireless industry led to the publication of Always On, a book about the smartphone’s influence on society, business and culture.

Abstract

Electromagnetically sensitized people may develop symptoms and health problems, when exposed to certain types of electromagnetic fields (EMF), known as electrical hypersensitivity (EHS). Over time, the effects may become stronger if such exposure continues. The Dutch EHS Foundation is committed to finding ways to understand these phenomena and to doing something about it. This study reports the results of a research questionnaire distributed among EHS people before and after that they had taken measures to reduce their exposure to EMF. Information requested included (1) the types of symptoms that people reported, and (2) the effects of EMF reduction strategies on the disappearance of EHS symptoms and improvement of well-being.

In a public meeting at FCC headquarters on July 14, the agency which once served the people, instead acted like tyrannical thugs in an escalating series of remarkable events.

First, they prevented wireless science advocates from displaying a simple sign, violating their First Amendment rights in a public venue. Then, a security guard forcefully prevented a t-shirt from being taken out of a bag, by a former Congressional candidate with opposing views.

Next, a Bloomberg reporter had his credentials confiscated — almost unbelievably — for merely talking with the former Congressional candidate.

Following these incidents, the reporter, Todd Shields, was visibly irate with FCC Commissioner Tom Wheeler — who also happens to be the former president of CTIA, the wireless industry’s lobbying organization.

“Moments ago I was attempting to talk to to some people who came to attend the meeting and have concerns about radiation and 5G. And your security force intervened — told the guy he couldn’t show me the t-shirt he wished to display at the meeting, forced him to put it away, and confiscated my FCC-issued ID. Is this consonant with the discussion that ought to be taking place here, and what’s your reaction to this action by your staff?”

Performing precise operations, delivering drugs to the body's every cell or unclogging the heart's arteries can never be as easy as before. The world of medicine has once again created a breakthrough that could help doctors and scientists navigate the human's body more efficiently with the use of technology.

Two prestigious universities, Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne and ETH Zurich, have joined forces in conducting the study that was published in the journal Nature Communications, according to STgist. The research claimed how scientists were able to find a way to use microrobots as their aid in performing complicated operations to humans that could sometimes lead to death. The study was led by Scientists Hen-Wei Huang with Bradley Nelson and Selman Sakar.

Walk through the new Canadian headquarters for global diamond giant De Beers and you'll notice that typical desk phones are missing. It's deliberate.

Some desktop computers still exist, but employees are more likely to work on a tablet. Phone calls are made using a headset on those devices or using a cellphone. No desk phones allowed.

The conclusion of a 2016 scientific paper on tinnitus and cell phones states: "This study collected evidence for the association between exposure to EMRFR [electromagnetic radiofrequency radiaiton] and tinnitus in some patients, particularly those suffering from electromagnetic hypersensitivity. While it is not fully confirmed, the authors consider it appropriate to direct more attention to cell phone use in the diagnostic investigation of patients with hearing disorders, especially tinnitus. The Daily Mail journalist shares what one of the authors of the study has to say, but does not mention the possible role of electromagnetic radiation in causing tinnitus.

LONDON (Reuters) - Makers of inhalers to treat asthma and chronic lung disease are racing to develop a new generation of smart devices with sensors to monitor if patients are using their puffers properly.

Linked wirelessly to the cloud, the gadgets are part of a medical "Internet of Things" that promises improved adherence, or correct use of the medication, and better health outcomes. They may also hold the key to company profits in an era of increasingly tough competition.

Drugmakers believe giving patients and doctors the ability to check inhaler use in this way could be a big help in proving the value of their medicines to governments and insurers, though they need to tread carefully on data privacy.

GlaxoSmithKline, AstraZeneca and Novartis are all chasing the opportunity via deals with device firms including U.S.-based Propeller Health and Australian-listed Adherium, as well as technology players like Qualcomm.

The internet is often called the “World Wide Web,” but it’s not actually accessible to residents of a large portion of the world. Today, four billion people are offline, and 1.6 billion of them live in sparsely populated areas around the world.

In recent years, a race to solve that problem has emerged among big tech companies like Google, SpaceX and Facebook. Now, Facebook has published research on an unconventional solution: using light to wirelessly transmit internet signals. The work comes from a Facebook-led initiative called Internet.org, which, according to the initiative's website, has so far brought internet access to more than 25 million people.

You see it more and more. Employees pretty much forced to be exposed to unnecessary EMF radiation by their employers because technological innovations make for a more productive and profitable business. Given that science is much divided about the risks of EMF radiation exposure (and the radiation exposure employees are subjected to may very well be under the governmental exposure limits) how do you bring up your desire not be exposed to unnecessary EMF radiation without being labeled a ‘difficult’ employee and perhaps having your career possibilities, or even employment term, immediately reduced?

Greenpeace Japan reported Thursday that waterways in the Fukushima district have hundreds of times more radiation now than before 2011, when the nuclear disaster that forced the evacuation of at least 160,000 people occurred.

Looking back at the past five years, the environmental group's new report, Atomic Depths: An assessment of freshwater and marine sediment contamination: The Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster—Five years later (pdf), finds that the hazardous chemical cesium-137 was present in the soil on the banks of the Abukuma, Niida, and Ota rivers.

Emails reveal role of Monsanto in Séralini study retraction

Editor at the journal Food and Chemical Toxicology invited Monsanto scientists to review a study that found toxic effects from Monsanto products, reports French newspaper Le Monde

In September 2012 the journal Food and Chemical Toxicology (FCT) published the research of a team led by the French biologist Professor Gilles-Eric Séralini, which found liver and kidney toxicity and hormonal disturbances in rats fed Monsanto’s GM maize NK603 and very small doses of the Roundup herbicide it is grown with, over a long-term period. An additional observation was a trend of increased tumours in most treatment groups.

In November 2013 the study was retracted by the journal’s editor, A. Wallace Hayes, after the appointment of a former Monsanto scientist, Richard E. Goodman, to the editorial board and a non-transparent review process by nameless people that took several months.

Set an example: If parents have their eyes on a screen constantly, it’s going to create a norm for their children. If they see you regularly checking your phone they’re going to react pretty badly if you try to take away their device.

IT’S A common sight today to see a toddler’s eyes pinned to a tablet or phone screen.

More often than not, it will be in the middle of a shopping centre or restaurant — anywhere a parent can’t stand the thought of their child running loose and screaming.

I’m not a parent myself, so I can’t pass judgment on those who choose to distract their toddlers from their next tantrum by passing them their mobile phone. I have heard many parents say that it is often used as a last resort.

But are we doing our children a disservice when we throw technology in their faces?

Edward Snowden has helped design a mobile phone case called the “introspection engine” that, he claims, will show when a smartphone is transmitting information that could be monitored.

Presenting via video link to event at the MIT Media Lab in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Snowden and co-designer Andrew “Bunnie” Huang showed how the device connects to a phone’s different radio transmitters, showing its owner knows when a cellular, Wi-Fi or Bluetooth connection is being used to share or receive data.

Turin is planning to cut back on Wi-Fi in state schools and government buildings over concerns that radiation might damage people's health.

The plans were outlined last week as the city's new new Five Star Movement (M5S) mayor, Chiara Appendino, presented her council's five-year political plan.

“We're aware that we need to consider electromagnetic radiation when we speak about pollution,” reads page 23 of the council's programme.

“We would like to take all precautions necessary and ask all public structures to work to reduce the volume of emissions and while guaranteeing connectivity for citizens.”

Lufthansa on 1 July inaugurated service between Frankfurt and San Jose, the first new nonstop between continental Europe and the California city since 2001. Over the last 15 years, the tech industry has been advancing at lightning speed, and Lufthansa saw fit to introduce the new route alongside its new Lufthansa FlyingLab concept.

The first FlyingLab ground experience centered around virtual reality, with passengers given the opportunity to try out the various tech products, including Samsung Gear VR headsets that were loaded with visuals of Lufthansa’s various longhaul cabins. The real show, however, was on board the Airbus A340-300 (operated by Lufthansa CityLine) once at cruising altitude.

[Our comment: We would be wary of signing up for such a project: providing personal health information to the U.S. Government for a project where emphasis seems to be on genetics and lifestyle rather than on the many environmental factors which are affecting our health. Moreover, the use of wearable devices such as Fitbit will be encouraged to tract vital signs.]

WASHINGTON — Government scientists are seeking a million volunteers willing to share the innermost secrets of their genes and daily lives as part of an ambitious 10-year research project to understand the causes and cures of disease.

Those selected to be members of the “precision medicine cohort” will be asked to provide a detailed medical history and blood samples so researchers can extract DNA. They will also be asked to report information about themselves — including their age, race, income, education, sexual orientation and gender identity, officials said.

Tyler is 11 years old and has a recognized disability, EHS (electro hypersensitivity), which means with accumulative and prolonged exposure to microwave radiation from wireless technology, he experiences severe headaches, accompanied with vomiting, extreme fatigue, insomnia and now night terrors. For the past four years he has been shuffling between three different school districts to avoid the mandatory exposure, which school officials have decided is crucial to teach the curriculum.

[Our comment: This article does not mention the potentially harmful effects of exposing very young children to radiofrequency radiation. One research group is investigating how use of touchscreen devices by children aged 6 months to 3 years influences their cognitive, brain and social development. The experiment involves placing a rubbery cap covered in electrodes on the baby's head to measure the electrical activity in his brain. A smartwatch is placed on each ankle to monitor movement and heart rate, probably without mentioning to the mother that "smart" technology emits harmful radiation. The experiment is part of the Tablet project in the Babylab at Birkbeck, University of London.]

[Our comment: We are reading more and more about burn-out affecting doctors. There has always been tremendous pressure in medical school and most doctors have to work very long hours. But what is new? Are we less reticent about talking about it? Could one of the causes be exposure to electro-magnetic radiation from and wide use of wireless technology (fostering less communication, sleep disturbances) - now ubiquitous in universities, doctors' offices, and hospitals? CDC Sees “Many Causes” of Autism

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, responding to this website, says there are many causes of autism and it is “not specifically looking at different sources of radiation” as a possible cause.

CDC, whose budget for 2016 is $11.5 billion, has been headed since 2009 by Dr. Tom Frieden.

The email statement from the CDC News Media Branch is as follows.

“Autism Spectrum Disorders is a complex disorder, and most scientists who study ASD believe that there is no single cause. We have learned that there are likely many causes for multiple types of ASD. There may also be many different factors that make a child more likely to have ASD, including environmental and genetic factors. Understanding more about these factors will help us learn more about the causes.
